  8. Maraba biryani Net +1
“Despite my bad first experience their maraba Biryani is amazing.”
  9. Papaitan Net +1
“I was craving for soup, and based on a previous positive review on their sinigang, I decided to try papaitan, a soup I absolutely love. I did not have high expectations, as this is an indian restaurant and papaitan is a filipino dish. But I have to say that it was amazing, and to put it in context, dare I say -and I may be crucified for this- I liked it as much, if not a bit more than the one I had at Kusina Natin To in Satwa, which is a well known filipino restaurant. The only negative point I can think of is the saltiness. I was drinking liters of water the whole afternoon after eating this soup. Otherwise the broth was concentrated and not too much in amount (which I like), offals tasted clean, and the amount of meat+innards was plenty. Very impressed by the soup! Price was very reasonable (23aed)”
  10. Puris Net +1
“Puris and dosas the size of your head and tasty too.”

The Bottom Line

Royal Gate Restaurant is a casual, broad-menu spot in Barsha Heights where you can order Indian food, Filipino dishes, Chinese noodles, breakfast or café-style drinks. The menu’s pictures are useful if you are unfamiliar with the choices. Reviews give particular attention to charcoal-grill chicken shawarma, seafood soup, biryani and Filipino specialities such as papaitan.

Value is one of the clearest reasons to consider it. Diners describe generous portions, reasonable prices and fresh breakfast items, while one review recorded puris and dosas at 10 AED per person. Fresh juices and Falooda ice cream also get memorable mentions.

The setting is generally described as clean and cozy, and weekday mornings may be relatively quiet. The main caution is uneven service. Many recent diners found the staff attentive and helpful, but others reported a wrong order handled defensively, staff ignoring tables, or waits of 45 minutes for food and 30 minutes for tea.

An older review also mentioned a 40-minute wait for one shawarma. The avocado smoothie has been inconsistent too, and one diner raised concerns about the AC not being switched on. For a first visit, ask about the dishes shown in the menu pictures, consider breakfast early on a weekday, and allow extra time if the restaurant is busy.
