What to Avoid (4)

Food 4

  1. Cumin noodles Net −1
“We didn't quite like the cumin noodles because there was far too much cumin. It was probably three times the amount that I would recommend in the dish but we found a good hack around it. Those noodles could be calibrated with the signature sauce. As a meal at San Wan is a very carb-dense meal, we could not finish the three bowls of noodles and tofu that we ordered and ended up packing it and having it the next day. Really balanced meal in terms of flavours. Even the cumin dish was fine once we had re-seasoned it with their signature sauce, which mind you is absolutely gorgeous.”
  2. Fried tofu Net −1
“The same goes for the fried tofu.”
  3. Salted egg custard boa Net −1
“The salted egg custard boa was nice, but was more of a bad dumpling and there wasn't enough filling in it unfortunately.”
  4. Zha jiang noodles Net −1
“- zha jiang noodles: 3/10. bad. Any flavor that was there was just straight up disappointing”

The Bottom Line

San Wan Hand-Pulled Noodles is a small Chinese restaurant in Jumeirah Lake Towers where the main attraction is visible from the tables: chefs pull the noodles fresh in an open kitchen. The Traditional Biang Biang noodles are the safest starting point, with reviewers praising their chewy texture, chilli oil and generous portions. Chicken wontons, wonton soup and the chilli cucumber salad are other frequently mentioned orders.

The menu has some memorable extras. Zaatar Biang Biang noodles have surprised diners who did not expect to enjoy the combination, while the house chilli sauce is popular enough that one customer bought a bottle to take home. Mochi flavours including mango passion fruit, tiramisu, blueberry pie and honeycake provide a less conventional dessert finish.

Expect a compact, cosy room with limited indoor seating and some outdoor tables. It can feel cramped when busy, and the restaurant is easy to miss: reviews place it beneath shops or on a lower level in the plaza. Cumin is prominent in some dishes, so ask about the seasoning if you are sensitive to it.

Prices mentioned include AED 49 for Traditional Biang Biang with chicken and a weekday lunch deal of AED 110 for two people.
