DXB LOCAL · FAVORITE DISHES / DATA STORY
DXB Local introduces Dubai’s absolute favorite dishes, an interactive guide to the dishes Dubai diners love.
Dubai’s food scene brings together traditions from around the world, with a population that comes from over 200 countries. We analysed more than 1.2 million written reviews across the top 1,000 Dubai restaurants to ask a simple question: across all that variety, which dishes do Dubai diners like best?
With more than 1.2 million written reviews analysed across the top 1,000 restaurants, this is one of the largest and most far-reaching review-based analyses of Dubai’s food scene. It brings the collective voice of diners into focus, at the level of individual dishes.
Many reviews contained no food mentions. The 477,898 that did formed the deeper analysis set; specific positive and negative opinions about dishes determined the final rankings.
Explore the study’s top 65 favorite dishes across Dubai in an interactive guide inspired by the city’s night markets. Every dish has its own stall, grouped into Mains, Appetizers and Desserts. Switch between category tabs, or open the Market Map to see all the stalls and click straight through to the food that catches your eye.

Each dish’s ranking comes from customer reviews containing a specific opinion about that food. Favourable mentions are counted and critical mentions subtracted, producing the net score that determines its position within its category.

Dubai’s restaurants are shaped by chefs, restaurateurs and communities from around the world, from long-running neighborhood favorites and homegrown concepts to global names and Michelin-recognized dining. That makes one question unusually interesting here: what food does Dubai actually love?
At its heart, Favorite Dishes asks the question every diner asks in one form or another: in a city with almost every cuisine imaginable, what is actually worth ordering?
Food writers, critics and creators are essential to telling that story. They bring taste, context, firsthand experience, and the people and places behind a dish. Favorite Dishes adds a different puzzle piece: what the collective voice of diners says when you look at it at city scale.
The final board brings together 65 dishes across Mains, Appetizers and Desserts, from widely discussed favourites to dishes praised by a smaller group of diners.
The Mains leaderboard opens with a surprise: French toast takes first place. In a Middle Eastern city, a sweet breakfast dish leads the category ahead of regional grill favourites. The golden, egg-soaked bread drew praise for being “crunchy”, “fluffy”, “tasty” and “perfect”. With 807 favourable mentions against 125 critical ones, it earned a net score of 682.
Mixed grill takes second place, making a strong showing for a staple of Middle Eastern menus. Usually bringing together kofta, marinated chicken and kebabs on one sharing platter, it offers variety for a table of diners. Reviewers highlighted the cooking and spices, contributing 688 favourable mentions against 119 critical ones, a net score of 569.
Lamb chops complete the top three. At Mawlana Turkish Cuisine, one reviewer described them as “perfectly charred on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth tender within.” The dish recorded 617 favourable mentions and 70 critical ones, giving it a net score of 547.
Hummus leads the Appetizers board: the familiar chickpea-and-tahini dip, served with warm bread, earned a net score of 857. One reviewer called it “creamy and fresh, perfect with warm bread”. Falafel follows at 763, bringing its crisp texture to mezze spreads, wraps and late-night plates. A reviewer described theirs as “very tasty”, also praising its crunch. Lentil soup takes third at 290, a humble Middle Eastern staple of lentils, cumin and lemon.
Tiramisu takes first place among Desserts, with coffee-soaked ladyfingers, mascarpone and cocoa earning a net score of 947. A reviewer at Coffee and Roses described it as “rich and velvety”. Kunafa follows at 488, combining crisp pastry, cheese, syrup and pistachios. At Bait Al Zain Mandi Restaurant, a reviewer called theirs “fresh, warm, and the perfect sweet ending to our meal.” Matilda Cake takes third at 318, with a Parker’s reviewer saying: “Their Matilda cake was rich in chocolate and freshly made.”
A review can tell you what a dish tastes like today, and why a restaurant matters. Analysis of reviews from thousands of diners tells a different story: what people remember enough to write about after the meal.
Favorite Dishes brings those voices together. The rankings use dish-specific opinions within written customer reviews on the web, with praise counted and criticism of the same dish subtracted. They show patterns in the review evidence rather than sales, order volumes or a representative poll of everyone in Dubai.
The study analysed more than 1.2 million written reviews across the top 1,000 restaurants. Many contained no food mentions. The 477,898 reviews that did formed the deeper analysis set, in which we looked for opinions about identifiable dishes. A review about service or the overall visit did not automatically become food evidence.
A food mention alone was not a vote. To count toward a dish, the review had to express a sufficiently specific positive or negative opinion about that dish. Our technology helped identify those opinions. The supporting customer text determined whether the evidence belonged in the analysis.
Equivalent names for the same dish were brought together. Repeated evidence for the same dish was deduplicated, and ambiguous praise was left out rather than guessed. The final board contains 15,725 favourable and 2,241 critical mentions, for a total of 17,966 dish-specific votes across the final board.
How We Found Dubai’s Favorite Dishes takes readers through the study in nine illustrated sections, from selecting the 1,000 restaurants to deciding which customer opinions count toward a dish’s ranking.
The field notes explain how our technology’s findings were checked against the original reviews, how different names for the same dish were brought together, and how duplicate evidence and ambiguous praise were excluded. Concrete examples make those decisions visible: why praising a whole meal does not automatically count as praise for every dish, and why a specific criticism of a cake still counts even when the reviewer also complains about its price.
Readers can follow the choices, checks and corrections behind the three leaderboards, and see exactly what the rankings mean.
Explore the methodology →The restaurant review analysis lets readers explore the evidence behind the rankings: reviews analysed, accepted food evidence, and positive and negative counts for top-ranked dishes at each of the 1,000 restaurants.
